Frequently asked questions regarding safe practice...

How long do I need to keep my client records?

NZCCA best practice guidelines offer that clearly written client notes be stored in individual client files for a period of 7 - 10 years after a client has completed counselling.   These files should kept in locked cabinets or cupboards with limited access to the key.

Ludbrook (Counselling and the Law, 2003) suggests that in cases of a child client where there has been a disclosure of abuse it is advisable to retain records until the child reaches the age of 26.  (See page 23: 2.20)

Is it compulsory for counsellors in New Zealand to have indemnity insurance?

It is not a legal requirement for counsellors to have indemnity insurance, however, if you are not covered by an agency or other organisation we would recommend that our members obtain indemnity insurance.
